Buen Retiro is the largest park in Madrid. It occupies 125 hectares and has different areas and architectural features such as Rosaleda, Estanque grande del Retiro and Palacio de Cristal.
The most popular item at the park is the Palacio de Cristal, which was built in 1887. It was considered to be an avant guard design at that time as it was made of crystal. Currently, the Palacio de Cristal is part of the temporary exhibition area of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and there are different exhibitions from time to time. Entry is free.
There is a man-made lake built between 1634 and 1636 and many people like to rent a boat and sail at the lake. Since the park is very spacious, it has attracted many people to go on weekends and during public holidays.
